Made it to MMA class last night. I was running late out of work Monday so wasn’t able to make it. Class started out pretty hard, doing bear crawl drills. That’s where you walk on all fours up and down across the mat. I’m still rather top heavy, so its very difficult and tiring for me to do. After the drills, we did some sparring. One of the newer guys was there, who is also much smaller than me. He’s taller but probably weighs as much as my left thigh. So we went at about 30-40% speed/power.
After a few rounds of that, we got to watch the pro fighters do some rounds in the gym’s newly constructed cage. That was pretty fun to watch. These guys were intense. They hit hard and fast and had some wicked takedowns. Was pretty cool to watch. I was just glad I didn’t have to go in there with any of them just yet.
After that was over, Gabe and I did some more sparring at regular speed. This time I was more prepared. I did much better at keeping my hands up, my stance squared and not turning away from punches. My combinations were better, only thing was bringing my hands back after throwing a punch.
So, I felt good after having a few days to think about how things went last week. Wednesday night is Muay Thai class, no MMA. Thursday we are having a Christmas party at the gym, so no class that night. I start a new work schedule next week that will hopefully give me some more flexibility to getting to classes on some different days of the week.
The last thing I did, Gabe had me jump rope for a three minute round. I did much better than when they had us jump rope in Muay Thai a couple months ago, but it was still tricky. Gabe suggested I get a jump rope and work on it at home. It will help my cardio as well as help me being lighter on my feet.
All that said, felt good to see some progress already. I feel like I’m a pretty quick learner. It’s often just a matter of getting my body to cooperate with what my brain knows it wants to do.
