Just a short note today with a few things on my mind. Today is Christmas eve. Yesterday I took a current photo to see how I am doing weight wise. I made a collage of my photo progress so far since the past summer. You can see my progress from left to right:
I still have a long way to go, but happy I’m still seeing progress, especially since I was sick in November, then in December had a few weeks off from bruised ribs and other disruptions.
This past Saturday I made it to MMA class. Sensei Gabe and I sparred for 3-4 rounds inside the new cage at the gym. That was pretty cool, but the coolness wore off once we started hitting. I got some good shots in, but Gabe tuned me up pretty good. Same story as last time. I’d get a few good shots, then would get careless or tired and Gabe would nail me in the face. I’d be stunned or would get pissed at myself for a second only to take another shot, then another.
I’d settle back down, then would do ok for a bit, then take some shots. The last round, Gabe slowed it down and showed me a few techniques I can work on. Those things will help as I develop. As it is now, I’m so slow, its almost frustrating to myself. I hope as the weight comes off, I will get quicker.
Afterward, we talked to Jason, the gym owner and MMA coach about me fighting in October. He said he’d like to see me work more on my grappling, so to start making sure I can get to No Gi twice a week, and to make it to Muay Thai on the other nights. He also said as we get into summer, he wants to see how my weight loss progresses. I hope to do some grappling tournaments this next year, just to get some competition experience. Also we are going to have a smoker in July, so I want to be at my target weight by then.
So today the kids are at their dad’s and wife and I exchanged our own gifts. She got me some Muay Thai shin guards that I have been in serious need of, none of the gym’s fit my big calves. Now that I have shin guards, I can kick during sparring. My kicks are slow and lumbering, so I need some serious work on them. Hopefully in the next couple months I can start to put things together.
